If you're devoted to Montu, Edward K. Werner is the guy whose work you need to read. Everything he writes is solid. He gives you facts. He speculates a little, when the facts point so intriguingly in one direction that it would be hard to avoid speculating. He's un-theoretical, un-ideological, un-tendentious and a little dry. Which is fine by me.
The only bias I can detect in his work is a faint liking for the god, in line with the friendly interest any writer with enough motivation to finish his work is likely to take in his or her subject matter. That's good too - I don't need to be told what I ought to be enthusiastic about. No sales jobs, please, I'm already sold.
I corresponded with Edward Karl Werner some years back, and he could not have been nicer: down-to-earth, friendly, gracious and helpful. May his good name be spread far and wide.
